A large Doberman is a far cry from a docile sheep; yet it was
the relationship between Ron’s father and a Doberman that taught
Ron all about what Jesus meant when He said, “My sheep hear my
voice.”

                         Jeep, the War Dog
                           By Ron Killen
------------------------------------------------------------

My Dad returned from WWII with a 110-pound Doberman that
he had trained as a scout dog in the Marines. He and this dog were
part of several invasion scouting parties in the Pacific. They were
inseparable. They both had Purple Hearts and they both had been
trained to fight the enemy and to survive. They were at war.

The Marines allowed Dad to bring Jeep home (I love that name)
because he had been detrained, taught not to do things that might
endanger civilians. Nonetheless, Jeep still responded to many,
many commands. Dad could tell him to grin and he would curl
back his lips in a toothy imitation of a grin. Somehow, all those
teeth never convinced me that grin was friendly.

I once asked Dad how he was able to train (and subsequently
un-train) his dog. His response was surprising. He said that when a
trainer first got a new dog, they immediately became inseparable.
They ate together, slept together, and worked together. However,
they didn't work very closely with other trainers and other dogs.
The idea was to let the dog become familiar with the trainer's
voice; learn to recognize his voice and only his voice.

I recall years later trying to get Jeep to do simple things like
stay or sit; it was useless. However, my Dad could whisper a
command from across the room and Jeep would immediately
respond. It was as if he couldn't hear any commands unless they
came from his master. Dad told me that if a Marine was injured
and unable to restrain his dog, the medics would have to kill the
dog before they could treat the wounded soldier. The commitment
and dedication of the dogs was so strong that they would lay down
their lives for their masters.

Have you ever heard that before? It seems the Marines had read
the tenth chapter of John. I know my sheep and my sheep know
me - just as the Father knows me and I know the Father - and I lay
down my life for the sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know
them, and they follow me.

Jeep and my Dad knew that their survival depended on
following the right commands and staying close to each other.
3400 years ago God said through Moses, Oh, that their hearts
would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always,
so that it might go well with them and their children forever!
(Deuteronomy 5:29)

Jesus said, Listen to Me, all of you, and understand [what I say]
(Mark 7:14 AMP). The Comforter (the Holy Ghost) will teach us
all things, and bring all things the Master said to our remembrance.
(John 14:26) However, we can't be taught unless, like Jeep, we
listen to the Master. Be still, and know that He is God. Be still and
listen to His voice.

We are at war against an enemy just like Dad and Jeep. Jesus
knew this and that's why He gives us peace: not the world's peace,
but His peace. So, let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be
afraid. Be good ground and bring forth fruit. Listen only to our
Master. He who hath ears to hear, let him hear!
