Most families have a ‘Billy’ that keeps life interesting and a
mother on her toes. If we didn’t have them life might be calmer,
but wouldn’t we miss all of the excitement?

                           Show and Tell
                         By: Kathy Whirity

He exhibited early in life a penchant for unfettered creativity.
Being born with a gift of gab and a vibrancy for adventure, there
was never a dull moment when my younger brother was around.

When Billy was in the second grade he needed to bring to
school a special something for show and tell. That day he proudly
showed off a hamster with a king sized cage and enough toys to
keep this princely pet content for days. Billy was the most popular
kid in the second grade that day, as classmates oohed and aahed
over such a neat exhibit.

The only trouble with this whole scenario was that Billy didn't
own a hamster. He had gotten up, bright and cheery-eyed that
morning , making the first stop the pet store.

Unbeknownst to our mom, he slipped a twenty-dollar bill out of
her purse while she was busy making breakfast. He had it all
figured out. He would present his 'pet' to the class, then after
school he would return everything to the pet store explaining that
his mother wouldn't let him keep it. The money would be returned
to Mom's purse and none would be the wiser.

When Mom got the call from the manager of the pet store that
afternoon, she wasn't sure what to make of it. Anger set in by the
time Billy came walking through the door - the crumpled, twenty
dollar bill stuffed in his back pocket.

Some may have said, "There goes the making of a delinquent!"
Still others may have thought of him as a naughty child with a
heck of an imagination. He was punished that day but, like every-
thing else, it didn't phase him one bit. He was already dreaming up
his next adventure.

Billy is a grown man now. He still possesses an endless gift of
gab; and if you look close enough you can still detect a bit of the
boyish charm that kept Mom forever on her toes. In a way you
could say that remorse for his childhood has come late in life.
Now it is he who worries as he tries to keep one step ahead of his
own son who, you guessed it, is just like dear old dad! The old
saying, what goes around comes around, has surely proven true for
my brother.

Write 2 the Heart now has an affiliate program with Cognigen.
They have several long distance plans to chose from. I personally
use the PowerNet Global 4.5¢ Per Minute Plan. I love having my
own toll free number without the monthly fee; I only pay for actual
calls. My family can call home whenever they are out of town. I
have used it more times than I care to remember over the last three
years in emergency situations.

Cognigen has more than just great long distance rates; they have
calling cards, internet access, web hosting services and much more.
You can check out all of their telecommunication products and

                     Letters From Our Readers

What a lovely story by Betty King about her father's old Bible!
She described the memories of her father so well, and also the
mysteries of her parents' pasts. It made my family take a look at
our own Bibles and wonder what legacies we will one day leave
behind.

Jesus, is the greatest heritage one can receive. How wonderful
for you to be blessed with your father's faith, Betty. Thanks for
sharing your beautiful story "My Father's Bible."
