Someday My Prince
By: Jill Knotts
---------------------------------------------------------
When I was a little girl, I watched the Disney movies and wanted
to be the beautiful princess who married the handsome prince. Of
course, living happily ever after was a foregone conclusion. I
practiced being a princess by dressing up in too big dresses and
fashioning a crown out of whatever I could lay my hands on. I
anticipated the day I would grow up and find my prince.

Something happened along the way, I became a teenager. The heck
with looking for a prince, bring on the boys! Why look for a
prince with a horse when you could date a guy with a convertible.
After all, parking a horse at a Dairy Queen would be more
embarrassment than a teenaged girl could handle. Those long
dresses would just get in the way on the dance floor.

Eventually I married and started a family of my own. Meeting day
to day obligations put dreams in the background. Children have a
way of keeping you focused on what is going on right now.
Princess, prince, what childish ambitions. Try and find that job
description listed in the classifieds!

At last the kids move out. You have a chance to reevaluate your
life, your goals, even childhood dreams. Some you put on a shelf,
some you let go and some you take a harder look at.

I roll over as I wake up in the morning, there lies my husband, my
significant other, sleeping beside me. I wonder why I let go of my
dreams of a prince so long ago. A prince would not be losing his
hair and putting on a few pounds.  It would be very un-princely
to snore softly at my side. Just watch the videos, a prince has no
bodily functions. They just stand around looking charming.

I reflect on my life thus far. When I had a flat in the middle of
the night, no prince appeared to bail me out. Hubby came though
and changed the tire. When the kids got stranded, hubby was there
to rescue them.  It was he that raced us to emergency rooms for
breaks and booboos.  I didn’t see a prince around holding my hand
during difficult labor. No prince used the royal treasury to pay
our bills and buy our groceries. It was hubby who stopped the
leaks and fixed the plumbing. It’s hubby who tells me how
beautiful I am when I put on my favorite dress. Hmmm... maybe I
have been looking at this wrong. I wonder... If I lean over and
give him a kiss, do you think my prince would wake up?

Jill has written “Hooked”, which can be found in the archives. She
and her husband enjoy the empty nest period of their lives, though
friends tell her it is short lived..

Cheryl's Corner

Jeremy just filled out his very first income tax return. When he
was through filling out the personal information about himself, I
double checked and found that he had not written his social
security number. When I pointed this out to him, he informed
me he didn’t want just anyone to have it.

Life is full of funny things don't you think?

God bless
Cheryl
